2016 to 2017: Buckle Up for a Lot of Words!

Another year coming to a close. An amazing December made up for a sickly and ridiculous November. Woohoo! Here’s what’s happening with the boys, a monthly recap, a random rambling about things I’m thankful for in 2016, and a preview to 2017. Buckle up for a lot of words. For I have a lot of words. Good words. From my very good brain. Fun! (Look at how presidential this blog is sounding! Oh buddy……hooray for 2017?)

Speaking of good words, Fred is starting to talk! I try not to compare children, but this is way earlier than Ben. So it caught me off guard when I realized that the babbles were words! So far, he has:
Mama/Dada
Go go go! (gah gah gah!)
Banana (nana)
up
ball
Brob-Brob (Ben/Brother)
and a few other things where he can repeat the cadence of our phrases. He also uses sign language for “drink”, “more”, and “please” on a regular basis. It’s hilarious to watch him communicate more and more. Look at this stud:

IMG_8749

Ben continues to be pretty introverted unless he is really comfortable with the people around him. Then all of the sudden, he can say the funniest things or bust out the best dance moves. But if you call attention to it, he’s done. One day, instead of saying that he heard something, he told me, “My ears are collecting noises!” The kid cracks me up.

IMG_8592

The boys actually have the ability to play together now and it is rocking my world. Sometimes, however, they have their conflicts. Ben learned a while ago that he will get in trouble if he pushes Fred, so he started kissing him whenever he invaded his space. One day, I walked in to see a crying Fred.
“Ben, did you push your brother?”
“No….”
“Oh, so why is he crying?”
“Because I kissed him so hard!”

IMG_7833IMG_7841

The first snow was perfect snowman snow. It was awesome. And then I decided it was time to go to Florida.

IMG_7900IMG_7898

We had a FABULOUS trip to Florida to kick off December. I flew in with the boys on Sunday and Jesse joined us on Thursday. We all flew back together on Tuesday. We loved time with Holly, Kyle, and the cousins. There was a lot of down time with new toys and sunshine, a day at Sea World, and some fun local activities. It was hard to come home.

IMG_8147 IMG_8280 IMG_8386

Remember when this blog was full of home improvement projects?? We have once again picked up momentum on some projects. Our “Door to Nowhere” was replaced with a window and I gave our guest room a makeover. We replaced the giant queen bed with a twin trundle and we have more space! I’m thrilled with the results. I even got Pinterest-y and put Fred’s footprints and Ben’s hand print on the wall. I was pretty pumped about being crafty for a few minutes.

IMG_8799IMG_8848IMG_8877

We also learned that the bathroom remodel from 5 years ago involved nails being shoved into our water lines. OOPS. And we learned that nails can plug a hole for five years before allowing water to drip into the basement. Science!
IMG_8573

The rest of December was filled with play dates, Christmas cheer, realizing Fred is big enough for play places, a zoo attendance challenge for the winter months, and celebrating with family. The boys got additions to their Trackmaster system for Christmas. We have been playing with it nonstop for a week. Choo CHOO!

IMG_8541  IMG_8580 IMG_8590IMG_8914IMG_8784

And now to the mushy, reflective, end of the year part of the blog. Ha!

In No Particular Order…..Things I am Thankful For:

Self-Imposed Deadlines.
I didn’t make a resolution for last year, but I did manage to do a blog for every month of 2016. Sometimes I didn’t feel like writing, but I’m glad I have those memories stored somewhere – because I really struggle to remember these blurry times. So WIN.

Flexibility.
I’m working on not being too hard on myself. That’s why I’m not caring (too much) that this entry is already 8 days late of my self-imposed deadline.

Ben.
IMG_8496 IMG_8513
Oh my Ben. I’ve never met anyone like him. He loves people but is totally fine being on his own. He appears like he’s totally tuned out, but then you can catch his lips slowly creep into a smile when he overhears something funny. He tells super weird and abstract jokes, and I rejoice and fear that he’s just mimicking his parents’ sense of humor.
“How do you make a pancake laugh? Tell it an elephant joke! HA. HA!”
He loves puzzles, mazes, look & find books. He loves his family deeply. He does not like changing activities or getting out of his pajamas. He gets concerned when characters on shows are sad or worried. He loves Lightning McQueen & Thomas the Train. He rarely sings, but then he suddenly writes his own song with the chorus: “You Don’t Need a Seat Belt for a Donkey!” He is ridiculously innocent and sweet. He waits to go to the bathroom until the very last second possible. You can get him to do almost anything if it’s a “race”. He is an excellent buddy and brother – most of the time.

Fred.
IMG_8639
Oh my Fred. My social butterfly. He has the best flirty smile and uses it all the time. He skipped over baby toys in a quest to keep up with his brother. He has the best happy face and the saddest sad face. He is adventurous and brave and goes with the flow. He’s entering the crazy hard toddler part of not being able to communicate as much as he wants to. He loves bubble baths. He hates getting his diaper changed. He loves balls and anything with wheels. He dances by stomping his feet and pumping his hands in the air. He is an excellent buddy and brother – most of the time.

Husband.
YOU GUYS. HE’S THE BEST. (The guy does not love PDA via the Internet. But I could write a novel. Just trust me…the best person for me on the planet.)

The Fam.
Seeing my favorite people be the best grandparents, aunt, uncles, and cousins, to my boys is one of the biggest joys in my life.

Politics.
Okay, I just threw up a little in my mouth, but hear me out. Once upon a time, I was an excited social studies student. I thought it would be cool to be a speech writer. I loved teaching fifth graders about the branches of government. 2016 kind of ruined my fascination with the whole political process. But I feel fortunate that I have enough of a diverse social circle that I am challenged in the way that I think on most issues. So I know that there are people on each side that are good and wonderful and smart and caring people that love their families and love their friends and want to create a better future. Each side has good people, and I refuse to let the noise of the world convince me otherwise. I choose to be optimistic.

Hormones.
Having babies is hard on a body, and I feel like I’m just finally recovering. I’ve been fortunate that I bonded well with my infants and had good recoveries after birthing those boys. But it turns out that when I stop nursing, everything goes to crap and I go on a roller coaster of a special kind of crazy. So the second half of 2016 was a challenge to feel normal and I still have some flare ups of hormonal explosions. But I’m staying positive and thankful that things are getting back under control for an enjoyable 2017. Whew!

Moms.
Not only did I luck out with the most excellent moms, I have been blessed with a sister and friends that are amazing moms. Watching the women around me in my life be strong and smart and awesome is a ridiculous joy.

Obviously, there are many more things I am thankful for and hopeful for and praying for, but I’m going to try to wrap this thing up. If you are still reading, I’m thankful for YOU too. Thanks for being part of my life and caring enough to check in on the blog.

In No Particular Order…..Goals/Things I’m looking forward to in 2017:

Continuing supporting my Jesse in his job so that I can keep doing my dream job.

Seeing the growth and development of the boys, especially when the “terrific twos” and kindergarten are in our future!

Sweet summer vacations, including watching my sister get hitched. Bonus brother time!

Monday nights in Bachelor Nation with some fabulous friends (don’t judge us).

Church and trying to read things that get my brain geared toward faith.

Keeping my blog and pictures organized and updated. I CAN DO IT.

Win at The Feast of Odin. Bring it, Brother.

Play dates, catching up with old friends, keeping up with new friends.

Okay, obviously there is more than that. But there are some trains to play with in this house, and I need to get to it. And I’m getting hungry. So I’m going to post this. Happy New Year to you!!

November 2016: In Like a Sickness, Out Like a Turkey.

Little did I know that our Halloween treat-or-treat extravaganza would be our last fun for a while… Within 18 hours, I was sitting in the doctor’s office with Fred. He was treated for croup and we were sent on our way. I thought we were done with illness after that. Oh….I was so wrong. Then came the sluggishness and loss of appetite. And sniffles. And headaches. Then the congestion. Then the coughing. By the end of the week, Jesse was home from work and sending me back to bed every time he looked at me. Then it was his turn. We traded germs and rotated through symptoms in quarantine for a solid two weeks. I pulled Ben from preschool for 8 days. It was gross. Any pictures from November 1-15 look pretty much like this:

IMG_7473 IMG_7469 IMG_7467IMG_7439IMG_7459IMG_7446

The boys filled their screen time quota for the year in about 2 days. Oh well. You know it’s bad when the preschooler is totally content to be wrapped in a blanket and left on the couch for a couple hours at a time in the middle of the day. Slowly we got back into trains and eating and playing. We were just slow for a while…

IMG_7428 IMG_7431 IMG_7436 IMG_7480

We did make two exceptions to our house-bound state. I took the boys with me to vote. That might have made me sicker, so we went to the church sanctuary to pray about our health and the state of the world. Whew! The second trip was to the medicine aisle of Target. Good thing they provide cart wipes. Sorry to be out with my germ monsters, but we REALLY needed to leave the house for a minute and restock on some supplies.

IMG_7463IMG_7461     IMG_7476

Then things finally started getting back to normal. My parents visited, we made a triumphant return to the zoo (and saw the baby rhino!!), parks, the library, and the world in general.
IMG_7629 IMG_7635 IMG_7637   IMG_7549 IMG_7545 IMG_7538

After staying inside with two snotty, wonderful children for so long, I was ready for a date night!!  WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO! Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them did not reach Harry Potter amazing status, but it was a good show with some magical fun.

IMG_7579

Thanksgiving was a nice treat of visiting with family at Great-Grandma’s nursing home and then attending Disney on Ice! So much fun. Ben was at the perfect age and loved the music and lights. He enjoyed Peter Pan flying, but later assured Jesse that “ropes helped him”. Ha! We had another Thanksgiving dinner with my in-laws on Saturday. It was some nice family time.

IMG_7641 IMG_7678

We also checked out the Festival of Trees. It was a very nice event and fundraiser. It won’t be added to our “must do” holiday list in Des Moines, but it was definitely worth checking out. After all, there was a train to ride… and Santa. Obviously my boys loved Santa.

IMG_7682 IMG_7690 IMG_7691 IMG_7696 IMG_7698

Recently there has been a baby boom in Des Moines. I’ve been lucky enough to get to snuggle some fresh babies, but I’m also reminded that babies are HARD. Haha. It’s great to be living in these exciting toddler/preschool times. I would gladly pause time for a while right here…

A White Ninja, Slimer, and a Corn Pool

For 366 days, Ben told me that he was going to be a ghost for Halloween 2016. Every single time we read a story about Halloween, he stuck to the same costume idea. So of course, when we had half of his costume on, he decided that he would no longer be a ghost! Instead, he declared himself a ninja. So I took a scrap of fabric, wrapped it around his head, and agreed that he was a ninja. Done. I’m so glad that I did not invest more than $10 into his costume in the first place. Preschoolers are hilarious. And even more hilarious, I themed our family costumes around Ben being a ghost. So, here we are: a ghostbuster, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, Slimer, and a ninja.

IMG_7252 IMG_7256 IMG_7259

We spent a beautiful fall afternoon at the zoo’s Night Eyes event. It was our third year in a row and had a lovely trip around the zoo. Ben was finally old enough to enjoy the bounce house and got a kick out of all the decorations.

IMG_7250 IMG_7251  IMG_7260 IMG_7269

My attempt at a Fall photo shoot. Isn’t it picture perfect?

IMG_7278

Another family tradition is visiting Center Grove Orchard. Things that made this trip extra excellent: Both boys being old enough to enjoy the variety of activities, the opening of a new train ride, Uncle Nate’s company, visiting on a weekday afternoon when the crowds were down, and having gorgeous weather. The only downside was that we went a wee bit late in the honey crisp apple season…

IMG_7327 IMG_7331 IMG_7337 IMG_7340 IMG_7350 IMG_7358 IMG_7366 IMG_7379 IMG_7389 IMG_7445

After several weeks of Halloween/Fall/Octoberfest/Etc celebrations, we wrapped things up by trick-or-treating! Another tradition is heading over to the nursing home to see Great Grandma and partake in the excellent tradition of getting candy every two steps from residents that are more than willing to bend the “one piece per child” rule. When we arrived home, I took Ben around to the neighbors that still had lights on. He was SO excited to knock on doors and tell jokes. It was pretty special to run around with him and see some friends.

IMG_7407 IMG_7414 IMG_7417

Little did we know that this would be our last outing for a long time. Within 12 hours, Fred would be at the doctor and the rest of us would be sliding into quarantine with a variety of ailments. So well done, October. You were a beautiful party of autumnal glory. AhhhhhCHOO!

October 2016

Celebrations
Melt Downs
Hysterical Laughter
Random screaming
Tears of Happiness
Tears of Frustration
It is a beautiful season of life.

I have a preschooler and a toddler! WHAT?? Over the past few weeks, Fred has decided he was a walker, and Ben has decided he is a talker! This of course means exciting and fun times in our house. I am loving it.

My mother-in-law captured the boys at this stage perfectly:
IMG_7119IMG_7123

With Fred’s new independence comes Fred’s LOVE of independence. No longer is my little guy content to be held when something fun is going on. He needs to be in the action and is determined to keep up with his brother. This makes our life easier and much harder at the same time.

IMG_6940IMG_7019

If you would have told me that Ben could be a “chatterbox”, I would not have believed you. He’s still pretty quiet until he gets comfortable, but it is so fun to hear him talk about stories and school. Here are some gems from the last month…

Instead of saying Yes or No, Ben sweetly says, “I think so” or “I don’t think so”. Are you having a good day. “I…..think so!”

IMG_6915

I was never a coffee drinker – but then I had Fred. So when the coffee pot was on in the next room over, Ben asks, “Is the kitchen busy?? I think it’s using some tap dance!!”

IMG_7198

I gave Ben the job of cleaning Freddy’s smudge marks off of the window. He was very insistent on protecting his finished work. “Uh OH!! Freddy’s coming again to make a mess. No, Freddy!! The way is blocked!!”

IMG_6861

Smile, Ben!

At preschool, the class is working on listening skills. (SHOCKING I KNOW! Hahahaha…) Ben has the routine memorized and does the actions every time.
“Eyes are watching.
Ears are listening.
Voice is quiet.
Body is calm.”

My son has become a middle schooler. He doesn’t believe a coat is ever necessary and responds to my after school interrogations by holding up a hand and calmly saying, “Don’t tell me more questions, Momma…..”

IMG_6805

“Helping” with laundry

We are working on the forms of “did/does”, but Ben often gets excited and announces,
“What’s that doos?”
“I dood it by mineself!”

IMG_6862

We’re holding hands!!

Usually Jesse puts the boys to bed, as he is good at being short and sweet. I put Ben in bed when Jesse was gone one night, and he must have seen my weakness. Sweetly he said, “I love you. I can scooch over and there is room!” I almost caved, but I stayed strong and left!

IMG_7173

Fred copies everything now, including holding up the phone to babble and trying to insert keys into the door. My big guy.

While playing the IPad with his headphones on, Ben exclaimed, “JESUS!” I turned around to see what on earth he was doing. “Jesus! I love Jesus, Momma!” He was playing the Bible app. Whew!

IMG_7016

Writing is not high on Ben’s interests, but I almost cried tears of joy when I discovered he could write his name. So exciting.

Ben still doesn’t love to draw, but one day he really got excited about drawing a cow with me. He announced, “Daddy wants a cow for his birthday!! Daddy will be so proud to see a cow! He will be so so happy!!” And you know what? Daddy was pretty amused by the cow…

IMG_6931

We are still in the phase of life where it is awesome to color cardboard boxes and fly to the moon. “Let’s build a spaceship! It will be an outer space adventure!!”

IMG_6922

Another game on his Ipad is based off of the show Odd Squad. It’s science and math based, and it has introduced some pretty intense and hilarious vocabulary into Ben’s conversations. When he wanted to mix something the other day, he yelled, “I NEED TO MIX THE ANTIDOTE!!!” I’m pretty sure nothing has been poisoned in our house, but at least we have a scientist around to help!

IMG_6782

Fred is also really content to play trains and roll cars around, which makes this brotherly pair pretty darn adorable.

Other highlights from the last month include:

  • Our annual trip to Krispie Kreme for free donuts. Talk Like a Pirate Day is the best!
    IMG_6675IMG_6664
  • Sunday fun at Grandma & Grandpa’s house
    IMG_7111 IMG_7114IMG_7108
  • After good intentions to visit during the summer fell through, I finally made it to YCamp. It was great to catch up with some friends there and catch a quick hike with the boys. The Closest Place to Heaven on Earth.
    IMG_6821 IMG_6832 IMG_6837 IMG_6847 ycamp ycamp2
  • A trip to CF for the church fall festival and NinaPapa time

IMG_6896IMG_6893IMG_6864IMG_6890

  • We learned about the life cycle, thanks to Caterpilly the Caterpillar!
    IMG_6699
  • The Blank Park Zoo is the best in October: cool weather, low crowds, and decorations for Halloween. I don’t think he saw any animals during this trip, as he was too busy pointing out the spooky EYES!
    IMG_7136IMG_7141
  • The local fire stations did an amazing job giving tours and providing open houses for Fire Safety Week. Ben has lots of personal attention from the crew and he kept repeating, “WOW THAT’S SO CRAZY! THAT’S SO COOL!!!!!”
    IMG_7045IMG_7052IMG_7060IMG_7072IMG_7079
  • Girls’ Night!!! Teacher night out to see Carrie Underwood – a great show!IMG_6978IMG_6989
  • Checking out the Des Moines Marathon – an annual favorite activity. “LOOK! MORE RUNNERS!!”
    IMG_7105

Play dates, church fun, library events, walks outside. I love Fall so much – even if Winter is on its way. I’m looking forward to soaking up the rest of hoodie weather!

It’s hard to be one year old.

IMG_7033

Being one year old is amazing!

Day Out with Thomas 2016

I was starting to accept that Ben’s love of trains and Thomas might be lessening over time. Jake the Pirate, Lightning McQueen, and other interests started popping up in his life. But Thomas the Train Engine made a big comeback in our house, just in time for the annual Day Out With Thomas event in Boone!

Ben was still in love with the experience, even though his reaction wasn’t as extreme as when he was three – squealing with joy at THE Thomas. But he was still excited and loved playing in the toy room, riding in the coaches, and meeting Sir Topham Hatt!

Fred was a little more impatient during the ride, as he just wanted to walk the aisle of the train and did not enjoy being confined to the seat for 20 minutes.

I don’t know how many more years of train obsessions we will get, but I’m going to soak it up while I can!

September 2016

Oh my goodness. I wrote 99% of this and then totally forgot to finish and publish. D’oh! I’m definitely past my self-imposed deadline. Well, better late than never?? I’ll be back here in a couple weeks with another update!

What a month! Lots of changes came at the end of summer!

The boys are now sharing a room! After Ben was born, he spent 3 nights in our room. He was a very loud sleeper, and it was in everyone’s best interest for him to move across the hall. After Fred was born, he slept 365 nights in our room. HA! Since he didn’t sleep through the night until 8-9 months, and he liked to wake up at 5 AM after “sleeping through the night”, our options were to have him stay in our room, risk waking his brother, or have us stumble down the stairs when he woke us. We chose to let him stay in our room until he became a little more predictable and then throw the boys together for a trial period. Ben was SO excited to have Fred move in with him, and so far it’s been working out okay. Fred still likes to wake up between 5:30-6:30, but we manage to get him out of there before Ben stirs too much. Going to bed has been great though, as Ben has to be quiet and stay in bed in order to keep Fred sleeping! I was shocked at how much Ben wanted to share his room!

IMG_6044

Big brother helping move Freddy’s mattress into THEIR room.

We made a family trip to the Omaha zoo before Ben’s school year started. I was SO impressed with the Henry Doorly exhibits. It’s a huge zoo with a lot of variety. Ben loved it – there was a real steam train!! – and Fred actually got in a few naps on the go.

IMG_6144IMG_6127IMG_6154

Ben FINALLY turned four. The countdown ended with several celebrations. Saturday was “present day”, where he got to open Shipwreck Rails Set. He spent HOURS playing with it that day. It apparently lived up to the hype of the box. He was so excited.

IMG_6321IMG_6326IMG_6332IMG_6335

Sunday was “party day” with family. Nina and Papa fulfilled the request of a “chocolate cake with farm an-mals”. He got some new books and toys, including a new Lightning McQueen race track. Once again, this new track with wheels occupied him for HOURS. The kid has a great imagination and attention span for transportation vehicles!

IMG_6347IMG_6343IMG_6383

And finally, his birthday arrived – which meant PRESCHOOL STARTED! Ben was a bit hesitant to start school. Even though he likes people and activities, he’s my homebody that is perfectly content in his comfort zone. So even though the first day was hard: “I DON’T WANT TO GO TO PRESCHOOL! I WANT TO STAY AND PLAY WITH MY TOYS!!!!”, he was smiling when I picked him up. Whew.

Ben First Day of School

There have been a few other rocky days, including one with me carrying in a flailing, screaming boy, but he’s learning the routine and we’re getting there. Today he told me, “I didn’t want to go to preschool, but I had a happy heart.” Baby steps. He always tells me good things about school at the end of the day, so I’m optimistic that he’ll want to go someday instead of tolerating it. I’m also getting used to having a preschooler. It’s been fun to hear him talk about his teacher and being a “line leader” and “door holder”. My baby….

IMG_6482

“I’m going to sing with my teacher and meet my friends and look at bugs!”

In Fred news, he has started taking steps! I think he could fully walk if he wanted to, but for now, he prefers to crawl or scale the walls. Oh, and he loves to CLIMB. Slides, stairs, cushions, whatever he can reach. He doesn’t have any fear of falling off of things, so he keeps me on my toes. He’s babbling a lot (“dugadugadugaduga”) and drools like he’s breaking in 500 teeth (still has 6). He cries and buries himself in my shoulder when he’s starving and eats more than his brother. He’s happy most of the time and doesn’t even have separation anxiety from us when we leave him with other people (so far). He’s adjusted to brother’s schedule now and takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap when Ben is in school (MOMMY HAS AT LEAST 90 MINUTES EVERY DAY! WHAT?? I’m still in so much shock about it, that I have not used this time productively so far – ha!)

IMG_6276 IMG_6275IMG_6049IMG_6313

Ben continues to make me laugh every day. He doesn’t like transitions, but I think it’s pretty cool that he gets so involved in his activities that he hates to stop them. He’s figuring out why things are funny and announcing “THAT’S A JOKE” when he knows we are teasing him. Here are a few more Ben-isms from the month.

When I dressed him for the first day of school:
“What’s that shirt??”
“It’s a new shirt!”
“BECAUSE I’M FOUR???”

IMG_6298

What is something you liked at school?
“I did science! I looked at bugs closely in a special way!!”

IMG_6309

He wasn’t tired…

“What is something your teacher said today?”
“She said shhhhhhhh!”
“Why did she say that?”
“I said, ‘IM BENNY I HAVE AN OUTSIDE VOICE IM LOUD!!!!’ And my teacher said shhhhh. And then I started squeaking like a mouse because a mouse is quiet.”

IMG_6101

“I want to go outside and bonk things with my bonking toy.”
“You mean your baseball bat?”
“NO! My bonking tool!”
“Oh….your tennis racket?”
“Yes. My tennis racket.”

IMG_6462

IMG_6116

One barefoot. The other eating chalk. Sounds about right…

“Remember, Ben, what happens after outside time?”
“I go to preschool and Fred has nap time and you have shower time!”
Yep. You got that right, Kid…

IMG_6536

Planting a butterfly garden

After saying I would be up shortly, Ben said, “But MOM! Remember our show Nature Cat? No one gets left hind!! You need to come now!”

IMG_6071

Insert a million other funny things that I forget 5 seconds after they are said. Oh no!! Until next time….

IMG_6111

August 2016

Our Fred is one.

IMG_5741

Our sweet little guy is fearless and laid-back – ready to climb things or happy to sit and flip pages of books. He’s our morning person, animal lover, and friendly buddy. He loves his brother, throwing balls, flapping his arms to dance, and eating any food that is put in front of him. He dislikes diaper changes and not being able to unlock the baby gate. He is determined to keep up with Ben, and I think we have another car & train enthusiast on our hands. Happy birthday, sweet Frederick!

IMG_5575IMG_5519

We celebrated his birthday by having grandparents and Uncle Nate over for lunch and cupcakes. No one was surprised when he devoured his entire cupcake! A new ball pit, water table, bath toys, eating supplies, and books were favorite gifts.

IMG_5891 IMG_5898 IMG_5903 IMG_5930 IMG_5885IMG_5933 IMG_5935IMG_5699

Ben is painfully waiting for his own birthday, so it was a rough day when Freddy got to celebrate first. Slowly but surely, we are marking days off on the calendar. He will forget for a while, but then he will announce, “On my birthday, I will be four!! Is it my birthday YET!!?!??” And for the first time ever, Ben is hooked on the idea of wanting a specific toy. It’s Thomas related (shocker…), and thankfully I snagged it at half off on clearance. He talks everyday about the “Shipwreck Rails Set” and even pretended it was his birthday one day and played with an invisible version of the toy. Longest month ever. Ha!

IMG_6040

One of our highlights this month was going camping with some friends. We left Fred at home with my parents (GOOD CHOICE), and Ben was soooooo excited to put up the tent and go camping. He was pumped that he had an actual reason to use a flashlight and he ran the paths between our campsite with his friends. Apparently the key to camping with a 3 year old boy is to make sure you have 4 & 6 year old girls to play with. They were excellent entertainment and kept him in check too… Smores, hiking, skipping rocks, staying up past 11:30 and waking up by 6. Memories!

IMG_5850 IMG_5856 IMG_5852IMG_5869

Other highlights of the month include:

  • Play time with friends and neighbors! Ben got to walk with the neighbor’s dog and even hold the leash for a bit. He was way too excited about it.
  • Seeing Jim Gaffigan with both sets of our parents and my brother-in-law. It was a great show, and I’m pretty sure Ben fell in love with his first ever non-family babysitter named “Emma-wee”. It was pretty cool that Emily shared the same name as one of his trains.
  • My lovely friends Sara and Kathleen came to cheer me on at the Park and Rec Trivia Contest. I lost, but it was a good effort and we used it as an excuse to go out to eat.
  • Two false alarm trips to the doctor. Okay, one was rather legit, as Ben developed an infection on his outer ear. It was…..gross. The second was me convinced that Fred had an ear infection based on crazy mood swings. It turns out that he’s just a baby.
  • The park closest to us got a total makeover and new playground. It rocks my world, even though my boys are WAY too brave on it.

  • We threw our first ever garage sale and made enough money to make it worth it. However, I confirmed that I’m an awful negotiator and pretty much paid people to take things off of my lawn.
  • We made a triumphant return to story time at the library and Ben participated and loved it!
  • I made a day trip with the boys to see my friend, Dana, and meet her new baby, Wally. Few things are better in life than seeing my babies play with my friends’ babies.
  • We also returned to zoo trips, although I remembered that it is much harder with heat and crowds. Ben loved seeing Curious George and has decided that giraffes are his favorite animal. I totally had a splurge day to indulge this with a giraffe feeding and face paint. Ben loved it.

The absolute best highlight of the month was seeing the brotherly relationship between Fred and Ben develop. Ben has always loved his brother, but he’s really starting to like him! He takes care of him now and gives so many kisses. He comforts him when he’s sad and shares with him. Don’t get me wrong, he still gets annoyed and wants his space and own attention, but things have dramatically improved. Here are some pictures showing that relationship, along with cute Daddy pictures and some things Ben says. Because he is just plain funny right now.

Ben hasn’t taken a nap all week and we no longer gate him in his room for rest time. Today, he tiptoed down the stairs and in the loudest whisper ever…
“MOM!! I’M BEING QUIET!!! REST TIME IS OVER?! MOM! I’M BEING QUIET!”
“Oh, Ben, if you go potty you can join me down here…”
“MOM! I NEED TO ASK YOU A QUESTION!”
“Okay…”
“IN YO GABBA GABBA THEY HAVE A SONG ABOUT HOW YOU HAVE TO LISTEN.”
“Okay…”
“I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.”
“Okay…”
“WE HAVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM BEARS.”
“Let’s get you to the potty there, Champ.”

He often calls me over to “take a closer look” at something.

After running outside for a while, we came in all sweaty. This was his observation about the carpet: “The rug is so warm that I have to take my socks off. Take your socks off, Mom! Get your toesies out!!”

While playing with his Thomas characters and discussing the “Scottish Castle”:
Is the king at the castle, Ben?
No. It’s closed. We take over things.

He has three identical mini-trains. He renamed one, so now they are: Bert, Bert, and Juicysnacky. This name change is HILARIOUS to him.

That’s a little insight into the last month. Big changes are ahead, as Ben’s preschool orientation is next week! WOAH.

Des Moines Parks Tour 2016: #13-16

Ben fell asleep and Jesse needed to work, so I took Fred out on a Mommy-Buddy date to see more parks!

Our first stop was a quick peek at the Bright Grandview Golf Course Clubhouse.

Then it was off to Sheridan Park. It was a cute little park in a neighborhood, but it was hot and there wasn’t any shade – other than a shelter that was already hosting a birthday party. The baby swings were busy, so it was a very quick stop.

Pocket Park #1 was tucked in another neighborhood. It had very cute decorations!

Our last stop of the day was at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The wading pool wasn’t open today, but the baby swings were shaded. Whew! Fred was such a good sport about our visits. It was a great day!

Des Moines Parks Tour 2016: #11-12

I met my friend, Jaci, and her two little guys at Ashley Okland Star Playground at Ewing Park. It was a very large playground area with lots of things to keep the kids interested!

A few drawbacks included: lack of shade for adults and rather poor visibility once the kids got into the equipment. It was so busy and I was hot – so that could also influence my experience, haha! It was still a fun visit and great to get out of my park comfort zone!

And because I’m crazy, we stopped for ice cream on the way home to check off park #11 – Principal Park! There wasn’t a game going on, but Ben enjoyed the giant baseballs and running around the amazingly landscaped area.

Ben Moments

Things that I don’t want to forget, because he’s just so fun right now…

IMG_5491

As I’m typing this, Ben is explaining to Jesse in the other room that it is almost Halloween.

In response to Jesse saying “three strikes!”, Ben replies, “It’s the old ball game!”

When something is fun: “I want to do it million times!!!”

If something upsets him, he crosses his arms completely around his body and furrows his brow.

After I got scared that he was playing a monster: “It’s only me, Momma. It’s only me…”

We were upstairs playing Three Little Pigs. I was the Big Bad Wolf (of course). Suddenly, Ben stopped and ran to his bookshelf to get Knock it Down, his book about construction & demolition. He opened it to the correct page and explains, “Look Big Bad Wolf! You need a wrecking ball to knock down the brick houses!!”

Standing over a (disgusting) puddle of water at the park: “Look, Mom! It’s like a mirror! I see my ‘flection!”

IMG_5508

If we ask him, “Why?”, he responds, “Caaaaaaws ______________”

While pushing him in the swing, Ben suddenly announced, “I love you, Momma!”

He’s starting to “add” things together. On the counter, he was grouping the glue sticks together and announced that two sticks and two sticks made four sticks!

He has been interested in typing for a long time, but now he is interested in typing question marks – and knows they follow questions. He pounds out a question in gibberish and then puts a question mark – using the shift key and everything.

We are struggling with independence sometimes. Here are the steps of things that happened after I asked him to go upstairs and pick out an outfit for the day:

  1. Ran around the chair and came back to me.
  2. Climbed halfway up the stairs and dramatically announced that he wasn’t strong enough.
  3. Ran all the way upstairs and then back to me to tell me he that he ran so fast he needed a drink.
  4. Ran up the stairs and played in our room.
  5. Came back down and tried to play with Fred.

Finally I set a timer and he did it. He picked out clothes by himself. WOO!

Teamwork

He likes to “tend” things (pretend). As in, “Is that a cow in the back seat?” “No, I’m just tending, Momma!”

He is experimenting with spelling words, and he pointed at each animal and read me what he wrote.

IMG_5458

“These are my animal words. They are very handsome.”

We got our forms for preschool last week. Oh my. How time is flying.
